Ugly Christmas Sweaters

The best ugly Christmas sweater isn't the one that's merely ugly — it's the one that gets the whole party turning around. We design and knit every sweater ourselves in an ultra soft acrylic yarn, instead of printing a picture of a sweater onto a sweatshirt. That means light-up sweaters, sequin and reversible designs, tacky 3D tassels and pom-poms, cardigans, Fair Isle knits and a few with an actual game built into the front. Sizes run from baby up to men's 5XL and women's 4X, so nobody has to sit out the group photo — and whichever ugly sweater you land on, it's one you'll want to pull out again next December.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters

Ugly, Tacky and Proud of It

We have been making ugly Christmas sweaters since 2011, which means we have had a long time to work out what actually makes one land. It is not the volume of tinsel. It is the joke — and whether the sweater is good enough that you want to keep it and wear it again next year. Every design on this page started as a drawing by our own team and ended up as a real knit sweater, which is a slower and more expensive way to do this than printing an image onto fleece, and the entire reason our sweaters read as tacky on purpose rather than tacky by accident.

The types of ugly Christmas sweaters we make

“Ugly Christmas sweater” covers a lot of ground, so it helps to know what is actually here.

Light-up sweaters — these come with the batteries in the box and a switch you can reach through the knit. The Men's Leaky Roof Light Up sweater and the Women's Get Lit Light Up sweater are the two that get the loudest reaction.

Sequin and reversible styles — these give you a second punchline halfway through the night. The Naughty or Nice reversible sequin sweater flips from one verdict to the other with a swipe of your hand.

3D and embellished knits — these have tinsel, tassels and ornaments physically sewn on. The Men's Gaudy Garland sweater and the Women's Tacky Tinsel Cardigan are as gloriously tacky as this category gets.

Interactive sweaters — these have a working game or gadget on the front, like the Men's Drinking Game sweater and the Women's Deck the Halls Game sweater.

Christmas cardigans: These are for the parties where you want to look festive rather than deranged — the Women's Christmas Cowgirl Cropped Cardigan and the Men's Christmas Cowboy Cardigan.

Ugly, adorable, or a little bit cheeky

Whoever coined the term ugly Christmas sweater hadn't seen ours. Plenty of these are honestly adorable — a classic knit print you can wear to grandma's dinner and the office potluck without explaining yourself — and plenty of the others are tacky on purpose, with just enough of a cheeky edge to get a reaction across the room. Both count. Pick the one that matches the party you're walking into, and if you've got three parties, pick three. The funny Christmas sweaters end runs jokes-first, and Christmas sweater dresses are the closest thing to a sweater when the invitation says dress up.

How to choose the right one

Start with the room. An office party usually rewards a sweater that is funny at a glance and defensible afterwards — a Fair Isle knit like the Men's Dark Fair Isle Rudolph reads as a genuine sweater until someone looks closely. A friends-only party is where you spend your risk budget, and our funny Christmas sweaters are built for it. If there is a contest, pick movement over clutter: one bold idea that reads from across the room, ideally one that lights up or flips. And if the joke needs to be filthier than that, we keep those clearly separated in naughty Christmas sweaters and inappropriate Christmas sweaters so you can choose your risk level deliberately rather than by accident.

What makes ours different

Every design here is ours. We draw it, we develop the knit, and we do not source blanks from a catalogue that fifty other sellers are also buying from, which is why you can wear one of ours to a party and not meet three other people in the same sweater. A handful are officially licensed — Rudolph and Bumble and Gremlins among them — and everything else is original artwork. The knit itself is an ultra soft acrylic yarn that holds its shape and its colour, which is the real test: our customers routinely tell us they are still wearing the same sweater six Christmases later.

Finding your size and your style

Shop the full range in women's ugly Christmas sweaters and men's ugly Christmas sweaters, with genuinely inclusive fits in plus size ugly Christmas sweaters — men's runs to 4XL with 5XL on many styles, and women's to 3X with 4X on select designs — the same artwork, not a stripped-back version of it. Reviewers overwhelmingly report our sweaters fit as expected, so order the size you normally wear rather than sizing up out of habit. Women's shoppers also have cropped and oversized cuts to choose between: the Cozy Knit Rudolph Wreath cropped sweater versus the Santa's Log On Fire oversized sweater is the clearest example of the two silhouettes. And if a sweater is not the shape of your night, our Christmas dresses carry the same sense of humour in a party silhouette.

Matching with a partner, a family or the whole office

Most of our best designs exist in more than one cut, which is what makes group ordering easy rather than a compromise. The Santa Unicorn and the women's Santa Unicorn are the same joke in two fits; the Naughty or Nice reversible runs in men's, women's, boy's and girl's, so a whole household can wear one gag in four sizes. Matching ugly Christmas sweaters has the full set of designs available in more than one size, and it is worth ordering group sweaters as a batch — sizes on the most popular designs thin out first, and a group photo where one person is in a different sweater is a bad photo.

Comfortable enough to stay until the presents are open

Every sweater we make is knit in an ultra soft acrylic yarn, cut roomy and flexible rather than stiff and scratchy — which matters when there are that many snacks on the table and the night runs long. You should be able to eat, sit on the floor wrapping presents and stay to the end of the party without once thinking about what you're wearing. There's comfort in every stitch, even the deliberately hideous ones.

When to wear it, and when to buy it

The season really runs about three weeks. Most ugly sweater parties land on the first two weekends of December, office parties cluster the week after, and National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is the third Friday in December — 18 December in 2026. Beyond the party circuit, these turn up at holiday 5Ks, tree-lighting nights, family photo sessions, Christmas Eve dinners with a sense of humour, and as the single most reliable white elephant gift there is. Practically speaking: the best sizes on the best designs go first, so ordering ahead of the first December weekend is the difference between the sweater you want and the sweater that is left.

We are an online brand, which is usually good news for you: instead of driving to three stores to pick over whatever is left on the rack, you get our entire range in every size in one place — and it gets to you fast. Orders ship from our own warehouse within one business day, and we offer guaranteed overnight shipping at checkout, so “I need this by Friday” is a solved problem rather than a reason to go to a store. Most ugly sweater parties land in the first couple of weekends of December, so ordering in late November gets you the best pick of sizes — but if the party is in two days, overnight will still get you there.

What actually counts as an ugly Christmas sweater?
Traditionally, anything loud enough to get a reaction: oversized snowflakes, three-dimensional pom-poms, reindeer doing something questionable. The modern version is more knowing than the thrift-store original — the joke is that you chose this on purpose. A real knit sweater beats a printed sweatshirt every time, and if it lights up, plays sound, or reverses, you have moved from ugly into competitive.

What's the difference between a tacky Christmas sweater and an ugly Christmas sweater?
Functionally, nothing — they are the same thing under two names, and people use whichever one their family used growing up. If there is a shade of difference, “tacky” leans toward the gaudy end: tinsel, garland, oversized bows, anything with texture you can see from the door. Styles like our Tacky Tinsel Cardigan and Gaudy Garland sweater are the ones people mean when they say tacky. Everything in this collection qualifies under either name.

What do you wear with an ugly Christmas sweater?
Keep everything else quiet and let the sweater talk. Dark denim or black jeans, plain boots or white sneakers. If your party has a competitive streak, that is where accessories earn their place — a matching hat, loud socks, or festive earrings will push a good sweater over the top. Resist the urge to add a second joke garment; two punchlines cancel each other out.

How do I win an ugly Christmas sweater party?
Committing beats escalating. One strong, specific joke that people can read from across the room will beat a sweater carrying five competing gimmicks. Movement and light draw the eye, so a light-up or sequin style has a real edge. And the sweater should be genuinely wearable — the person who spends the night visibly uncomfortable never wins. A reversible design is the sneaky play: you get a second reveal after everyone has already judged the first.

Is Tipsy Elves a legit company?
