Funny Halloween Costumes

The costume that gets the whole room

Scary is easy. Anyone can buy fake blood. Walking into a party as a six-foot piñata, a chicken, or a hot dog takes a specific kind of commitment — and it's the person in the funny costume everyone actually photographs. That's the entire reason this collection exists. Every funny Halloween costume here is designed to land a laugh on sight, with no explaining, no accessories to lose, and no “wait, what are you supposed to be?”

Funny costume ideas, if you're starting from nothing

Most people land here with no plan, so here's the shortlist that works every year.

Animals: the chicken costume, the cow costume, the shark costume or a T-rex costume — inexplicably funnier than any of us can explain, and our animal Halloween costumes cover the whole zoo.

Food: a hot dog costume is a personality, and the banana costume and popcorn costume are close behind.

Objects: the piñata costume (or the piñata costume dress), the bush costume and the dart board costume — anything a human should not be.

Absurdly specific characters: the hamburger thief, the energetic bunny and the Where’s Walden costume are the ones that make one friend at the party lose it.

If you want the funny ideas split by who's wearing them, browse funny men's costumes or funny women's costumes.

Clever beats gory, and original beats trendy

There are two ways to be memorable on Halloween: be the scariest, or be the cleverest. We only do one of those. A good Halloween costume gets a reaction; a genuinely original one gets you a story people repeat next October. That's why our funny costumes lean original rather than whatever went viral in August — you're far less likely to meet your own outfit at the bar. Our skeleton Halloween costumes are the exception that proves the rule: a classic, but done in gold, iridescent and jumpsuit versions nobody else has.

Animals are automatically funny and nobody knows why

Dressing as an animal is the cheat code of funny Halloween costumes. Nobody can fully explain why a squirrel walking into a bar is funnier than a person walking into a bar, but it is. Our men's chicken costume and women's chicken costume are the purest expression of this, and the men's cow costume, women's cow costume and squirrel costume work on the same logic. It doubles as camouflage, too: when you're wearing a full cow costume, nobody notices you didn't brush your hair. Doing it as a pair works just as well — matching cow couples costumes and matching chicken couples costumes exist because you can go as a pair of anything. There are no rules.

Funny, and genuinely comfortable

A cool costume you take off at 9pm was a waste of money. Nearly everything here is a one-zip jumpsuit or onesie you step into once and forget — soft, warm enough for a cold night, roomy enough for real clothes underneath. That's the actual reason our funny adult Halloween costumes come back out for the office party, the neighbourhood parade, and the following year.

The ones that get photographed most

If you want the biggest reaction for the least effort, three specific costumes do disproportionate work. The angler fish costume and the dumpster fire costume both light up, which means they land in a dark bar and in every photo taken after 8pm. The two person crab costume requires a friend and a small amount of coordination, and is worth both. Add the stick figure costume and the inflatable tube guy costume and you have our five most reliably funny designs of the last decade.

Going with someone?

Funny scales. Two people in matching absurd outfits beats one, so check the couples costumes for pairs that only work as a set, or family Halloween costumes if the kids are in on it. If you'd rather see everything at once, start at our Halloween costumes hub, or narrow to men's Halloween costumes, women's Halloween costumes, or a sexy Halloween costume if funny isn't the goal this year.

Don't want the pressure of being the funny one?

Being the performer all night is a real commitment, and some years you're just not up for it. No hard feelings — keep your options open with men's Halloween costumes and women's Halloween costumes, go the closer-cut route with women's sexy Halloween costumes, or take the entirely different direction that never misses: skeleton Halloween costumes. No bones about it.

Funny Halloween Costumes - FAQ
What makes a Halloween costume actually funny instead of just weird?
Recognisability. The best funny Halloween costumes read from across a room with zero explanation — a chicken, a piñata, a hot dog, a bush with legs. If you have to describe your costume more than once, it's a clever idea that isn't landing. Our whole funny collection is built on the sight-gag test: if it doesn't get a laugh before you say a word, it doesn't ship.

I need a funny costume but I'm going to a work party. Where's the line?
Stick to animals, food and objects, and skip anything referencing a person, a politician or a punchline you'd have to whisper. A cow costume is funny to everyone in the building including HR. Full-coverage one-zip jumpsuits also mean you're funny and completely covered, which is more than can be said for a lot of costume shops.

What are the funniest costumes you sell right now?
Year after year: the piñata costume, the bush costume, the chicken suit, the cow, the hot dog and the shark. They outsell every trend-driven costume we've tried, because a joke that worked in 2015 still works — while last year's viral character is now just confusing.

Can two people, or a whole group, do a funny costume together?
That's where these get properly good. Several designs are built as pairs, and plenty of the single costumes work as a group theme — six people as six different animals is a better group costume than any coordinated set. Start with couples costumes for two, or family Halloween costumes if there are kids involved.

Are these one-size or do they come in real sizes?
Real sizes. Men's funny costumes run S–3XL, women's run XS–3XL, and most are cut generously on purpose so a hoodie fits underneath on a cold night. Every product page has its own size chart — if you're between sizes on a jumpsuit, size up rather than down.

Can I go to the bathroom in a full jumpsuit costume?
Yes, and we get asked this more than anything else. The jumpsuits unzip down the front, so for number one there's no need to get out of the costume at all. Anything more involved and yes, the costume comes off — which takes about four seconds, because it's one zip.

How comfortable are they really, and can I wear one all night?
These are the costumes people refuse to take off. Soft brushed fleece and knit, no scratchy seams, no plastic masks, no props to carry. They're warm enough to trick-or-treat in without a coat over the top, which is usually the moment a costume stops being funny.

How fast can I get one, and what if the size is wrong?
Orders over $75 ship free, and we ship fast enough that a last-minute funny costume is a real option — see last minute Halloween costumes for what's ready to go. Halloween items can be returned within 14 days of purchase or before October 31st of the year you bought it, whichever comes first, so start any exchange early at tipsy elves returns.
