What is Fair Isle anyway--and why does it look so good? The style of knitting is named after a tiny spot in the Shetland Islands between Scotland and Norway. It's a place with lots of sheep, lots of cold weather, and not much to do besides sit around and knit. This traditional stranded method of knitting involves working two or more colors of yarn in the same row. Instead of tying off each color, the extra strands are floated between the stitches and then picked up again as needed.
Alternating between different colors provides just the right contrast to create intricate patterns. These are typically repeating patterns with a geometric motif.
